Structural Designer Position Summary

The Structural Designer applies developed knowledge and technical skills to perform structural design and drafting tasks on projects with moderate to complex features. This role is responsible for determining design criteria, developing drawings, and producing complete construction document packages that meet client and internal standards. The Structural Designer works independently on complex assignments while collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and project teams to ensure quality, accuracy, and schedule adherence.

Description

The Structural Designer applies standard and advanced design techniques, procedures, and criteria to complete assigned tasks or sequences of tasks. Responsibilities include determining drawing sequences and presentation, sizing system components, preparing sketches and notes, and developing material quantities and equipment specifications. The role includes completing field walkdowns, creating as-built or conceptual sketches, and assisting with the planning and execution of projects with diverse design requirements.

The Structural Designer supports higher-level designers and engineers as needed.

Core Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities
  • Independently complete layouts for simple to complex structural projects.
  • Determine appropriate section cuts and select standard sections.
  • Update and maintain P&IDs as required.
  • Select, apply, and modify standard design details.
  • Develop details for non-standard conditions based on drawings and engineer calculations.
  • Perform basic structural calculations and measurements; prepare related material lists and documentation.
  • Establish design criteria and define the order of work for assigned tasks.
  • Perform and review calculations and material documents as assigned by the Squad Leader.
  • Review and check calculations completed by other designers for accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare and deliver complete drawing packages to the Squad Leader after internal checks are completed.
  • Identify, correct, and communicate any design errors, inconsistencies, or deficiencies discovered during the checking process.
  • Produce complete drawing packages for moderate to complex design scopes.
  • Ensure all drawings comply with client-specific drafting standards and internal structural/engineering standards.
  • Coordinate and correspond with engineers and clients to support complex project execution.
  • Participate in meetings with engineers and clients to align on scope, design intent, and execution plans.
  • Coordinate with team members to balance workload and meet project deadlines.
  • Assist with estimating time and effort required to complete design tasks.
  • Collaborate with drafting and design teams to maintain project schedules.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to CAD Operators and Level I Designers as needed.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Design, Structural Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience as a Structural Designer or Structural Drafter on industrial, commercial, or infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency with CAD and design software (AutoCAD required; experience with 3D modeling tools is a plus).
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles, drawing standards, and construction documentation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, and sketches.
  • Experience working on moderate to complex projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field walkdowns when required.
