The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff. The RN maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards. Obligations include:
- Utilizing the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, evaluation) to formulate individualized plans of care.
- Identifying risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes including discharge planning; prescribing interventions to meet expected outcomes; evaluating effectiveness and conducting ongoing assessment from admission to discharge.
- Implementing psychiatric interventions to progress the patient toward wellness and addressing maintenance of wellness.
- Administering medications, educating patients, and recognizing adverse drug reactions.
- Demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision‑making and quality nursing care.
- Reviewing, revising, and updating medical records within required guidelines.
- Following up on client care responsibilities and communicating incomplete assignments to staff.
- Delegating duties using judgment and knowledge, remaining willing to assist staff and patients.
- Harnessing nursing knowledge to meet the needs of the facility, patient population, and staff.
- Floating among various clinical services where qualified and performing other duties and projects as assigned.
