The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a member of the North Oaks Health System (NOHS) health care team and is responsible for providing quality nursing care to adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients in accordance with NOHS standards of care. The LPN delivers direct patient care, communicates effectively with nursing personnel, physicians, other hospital departments, patients, and families, and serves on committees as directed by the Clinic Director.
Responsibilities are limited to the guidelines established by the Louisiana State Boards of Nursing and NOHS policies.
- 1–3 years of prior LPN experience, preferably in a clinic setting.
- Graduated from an accredited nursing school.
- Current Louisiana state license as a Practical Nurse, maintained at all times.
- Good physical health required for manual and physical tasks.
- Membership in an LPN organization is encouraged.
- Greet patients in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Call patients from the waiting area in chart order, obtain and record weight, height, vitals, and escort them to the examination room.
- Document medication lists, chief complaints, pain assessment, and maintain the master problem list in the patient’s record.
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures, including set‑up.
- Administer medications safely and effectively, in accordance with scope of practice and policy.
- Perform phlebotomy, EKG, respiratory tests, and other ancillary duties as ordered.
- Conduct DOT and non‑DOT drug and breath alcohol testing, as required.
- Process employee medical information and test results for clients accurately and confidentially.
- Assist with aseptic dressing application and instrument sterilization procedures.
- Collect and prepare patient specimens for transport, following universal precaution and laboratory requirements.
- Clean the patient treatment area after visits.
- Perform waived laboratory testing per policy.
- Carry out daily quality control and clinic checklist functions.
- Address patient and significant other psychosocial needs through appropriate social interaction.
- Assist physicians and staff as needed.
- Handle medication refill orders and client communication, including physician‑issued excuses and hospital test scheduling with proper pre‑authorization.
- Document all processes legibly and follow up on test results, prescription refills, and verbal orders.
- Follow NOHS compliance program and federal/state regulatory guidelines.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and maintain acceptable dress code.
- Report all incidents, injuries, medication errors, unsafe conditions, and adherence to attendance policy.
- Perform medication counts as required and label multi‑dose medications appropriately.
- Support clinic coordinators/Director in maintaining policies, procedures, and inventory.
- Check for expired items monthly and notify supervisor when replacements are needed.
- Clean and stock examination rooms as required.
- Express ideas clearly, actively listen, and use appropriate communication channels.
- Promote courteous professional relationships with patients, visitors, staff, and physicians.
- Coordinate referrals, hospital procedure testing, and admissions as needed.
- Assist with office duties including answering calls, pulling charts, filing, and audits.
- Attend committee meetings and in‑service programs.
- Share knowledge with colleagues.
