Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a member of the healthcare team and is responsible for providing quality nursing care utilizing North Oaks Health System standards of care. The LPN provides direct nursing care to adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients and adjusts methods appropriately to accommodate the specific needs of each age group. The LPN upholds the Philosophy and Objectives of NOHS and utilizes effective communication between nursing personnel, physicians, other hospital departments, patients, and families.

Serves on committees as requested by the Clinic Director. Patient care is limited to guidelines established by LSBN.

Other Information

1–3 years of previous LPN experience preferred, preferably in a clinic setting.

Specialized or Technical

Education Required:

Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing school, currently licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners, and maintain licensure. Membership in an LPN organization is encouraged.

Manual or Physical Skill

Required:

Must possess good physical health.

Responsibilities

Ensure the maintenance of quality patient care. The LPN will greet patients in a courteous and friendly manner, call patients from the waiting area in order of chart availability, obtain and record patient weight, height, and vitals, escort to examination rooms, and prepare patients for physician encounters. Document and graph on growth charts as appropriate and according to policy.

Record medications the patient is currently taking and chief complaints in the medical record; conduct pain assessment and maintain the master problem list. Reassess and document as directed; provide patient education and documentation.

Assist physician with patient examinations and procedures, inclusive of set‑up. Administer medications in a safe, effective manner according to scope of practice and policy. Perform phlebotomy as ordered and according to policy. Perform EKG testing, respiratory testing, and other ancillary duties as required and per policy.

Conduct DOT and non‑DOT drug and breath alcohol testing as needed per department policy. Assist with the processing of employee medical information and test results to the client in an expeditious, accurate, comprehensive, and confidential manner. Assist all clients with obtaining required medical information.

Assist with aseptic and sterile dressing application, washing, identifying, and returning instruments to Sterile Services Department for sterilization. Assist with collection and preparation for transport of patient specimens in accordance with Universal Precaution Policy and laboratory requirements.

Assist with cleaning the patient treatment area after the visit is completed. Perform waived laboratory testing as ordered. Perform daily quality control and clinic checklist functions as assigned. Attend to patient’s/significant other’s psychosocial needs through appropriate social interaction.

Assist physicians and other staff members as needed. Call in medication refills and return calls in response to patient messages as directed by a physician. Issue physician’s excuse for school/work. Make copy of excuse and place in patient’s chart. Schedule hospital tests as directed by a physician; obtain proper pre‑authorization as required; ensure procedures meet medical justification or have an ABN signed.

Call patients regarding test results as directed by a physician. Assist in retrieval, logging, and stocking of sample medications. Document appropriately and legibly at all times. Follow up with all patients regarding diagnostic testing results. Place follow‑up phone calls to patients and/or pharmacies regarding prescription refills and receive verbal/telephone orders from physicians. Complete all required forms, including workers’ compensation and laboratory reference forms.
