Position Purpose
The Assistant Bakery Manager supports the Bakery Manager in leading all aspects of bakery department operations, including production, merchandising, customer service, inventory management, food safety, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department consistently delivers fresh, high-quality bakery products while maintaining operational excellence, driving sales, controlling expenses, and providing an exceptional customer experience. The Assistant Bakery Manager serves as a key department leader and may assume responsibility for department operations in the Bakery Manager’s absence.
CustomerService & Sales
- Deliver exceptional customer service by creating a friendly, welcoming, and service-focused environment.
- Assist customers with bakery product selection, custom cake orders, special requests, and product recommendations.
- Promote bakery products through suggestive selling and product knowledge.
- Ensure displays, cases, and tables are attractive, fully stocked, properly signed, and customer‑ready.
- Support implementation of promotions, seasonal programs, and sales‑building initiatives.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Assist in coordinating daily bakery production, packaging, merchandising, and replenishment activities.
- Ensure bakery products are prepared, packaged, labeled, and displayed according to company standards.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering to maintain product availability while minimizing waste.
- Oversee product rotation and freshness standards to ensure quality and reduce shrink.
- Maintain clean, organized, and efficient production and sales areas.
- Support execution of company merchandising plans and operational initiatives.
- Assist with supervising, training, coaching, and developing bakery associates.
- Support onboarding and skill development for new team members.
- Help establish performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Foster a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and customer service excellence.
- Lead by example through professionalism, integrity, and strong work habits.
- Assist with labor planning, scheduling, and workload distribution.
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health department, and company policies and procedures.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, labeling, dating, and storage practices.
- Ensure associates follow safe food handling, preparation, and cleaning procedures.
- Maintain department readiness for food safety, operational, and compliance audits.
- Identify and address safety concerns promptly to maintain a safe environment for customers and associates.
- Assist with managing department sales, labor, inventory, and operating expenses.
- Support shrink reduction efforts through effective ordering, production planning, inventory controls, and product rotation.
- Monitor sales trends and adjust production levels to meet customer demand.
- Help achieve department sales, productivity, and profitability goals.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and department performance.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous bakery, food service, retail, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of bakery products, food production, merchandising, and food safety practices preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to multitask and perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and twisting.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work around bakery equipment, ovens, and food preparation areas.
- Ability to safely operate bakery equipment in accordance with company standards.
A successful Assistant Bakery Manager demonstrates strong leadership, maintains exceptional food safety and product quality standards, develops and supports associates, drives department sales and profitability, minimizes shrink and waste, executes merchandising programs effectively, and consistently delivers an outstanding customer experience while contributing to the overall success of the store.
