Position SummaryThe Soil Stabilization Crew Member works as part of a crew performing site preparation and soil stabilization for roadway construction projects. This is a hands‑on, physically demanding position performed entirely outdoors on active construction sites.
Crew Members will perform a variety of labor tasks while assisting with soil cement and soil stabilization operations. Employees will also receive hands‑on training to operate various pieces of construction equipment, including a soil stabilizer. The soil stabilizer is used to mix a binding material, such as Portland cement, into existing soil to improve soil stability, increase strength, and reduce moisture content in preparation for roadway construction.
As employees gain experience and demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively operate equipment, they may take on additional equipment‑operating responsibilities.
Job Duties
- Perform general labor and site preparation tasks for roadway construction projects.
- Assist with soil cement and soil stabilization operations.
- Operate a soil stabilizer to mix Portland cement or other approved binding materials into existing soil to improve stability and reduce moisture content.
- Learn and follow proper operating procedures for soil stabilization equipment.
- Monitor the stabilization process and communicate with the crew and equipment operators to maintain proper production and material application.
- Assist with the setup, operation, and cleanup of equipment and work areas.
- Load, unload, move, and handle materials, tools, and equipment.
- Assist other crew members in maintaining an efficient and safe workflow.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, cleaning, and basic maintenance.
- Follow direction from foremen, supervisors, and equipment operators.
- Maintain a safe and organized work area.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, construction vehicles, cement, soil, dust, and other jobsite materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Previous construction or heavy civil experience preferred but not required.
- Experience with heavy equipment is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to learn how to operate construction equipment.
- Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a crew.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the workday.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license preferred.
- Previous construction experience is preferred but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate.
- Experience working on a fine grading, excavation, site preparation, or heavy civil construction crew is a plus.
- Experience operating heavy equipment is preferred but not required.
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the Soil Stabilizer Crew Member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Ability to perform physically demanding labor for extended periods.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier materials or equipment with assistance from another crew member or appropriate lifting equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors for the entire workday in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely work around heavy equipment and moving construction vehicles.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the workday.
