Special Education Teacher
Instructs elementary, middle, or high school students with Autism in basic academic and living skills in one or more subjects, such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc. May be designated according to subject matter/content specialty. Utilizes current strategies and theories to plan and implement lessons. This position reports to the Principal.
Teaches students with Autism academic content and living skills. Prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to achievement level of student, as specified in Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), while providing instruction in the general curriculum using grade level standards.
Prepares course outlines and objectives according to curriculum guidelines or state and local requirements. Observes, evaluates and prepares reports on progress of students, including reevaluation referrals and development of IEP's.
Coordinates instructional activities with other professionals, including teachers, speech therapist, occupational therapists, physical therapist, mobility specialist and other professionals.
Assists students with special assistive devices, including orthopedic devices needed for sitting, walking or standing. Assists students in boarding and de-boarding from the school bus when arriving at school or departing from school.
Conducts parent/teacher conferences to review student's progress, performance, and behavior problems; works with parents/guardians to develop and provide an appropriate special education program to eligible students with disabilities. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops.
All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate education field, preferably an area of Special Education or General Education with a teaching certificate in an area of Special Education. A minimum of one (1) year's teaching experience is preferred. Certification requirements:
Low Function Autism
- Special Education Adaptive Curriculum & all five content areas (currently GACE Tests 083/084 + 087/088) This covers the Adaptive Curriculum P-12.
Excellent classroom management required. Applies, recommends, and implements technology to improve the effectiveness of school operations. Normal classroom/school setting.
Must be able to stand and walk approximately seven (7) to seven and one-half (7½) hours per day. May require occasional travel to other school locations.
Moderate duty
- On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping.
Lifting or carrying (35lbs) unassisted, assist with heavy lifting or carrying (up to 100 lbs.)
