Position: FT Customer Service Manager Trainee (H)

Hannaford Supermarkets started out as a fresh produce vendor in Portland, Maine and has grown into a leading regional retailer that prioritizes local food sourcing and sustainable practices.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Manage retail operations for the assigned department, making decisions that impact store associates, merchandise quality and presentation, and customer service. Build associate and customer relationships and promote a strong culture aligned with Hannaford Strategy through store huddles, role modeling cultural behaviors, and consistent use of tools to manage performance. Ensure store conditions—appearance, security, safety, and food safety—are consistently maintained at the highest level.

Be accountable for proper control of company assets.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment to retain associates and customers.
  • Ensure that all quality standards are met.
  • Manage department operations according to established standard practices.
  • Maintain department appearance and presentation.
  • Hire, train, and develop associates to meet department needs.
  • Achieve departmental financial objectives.
  • Supervise performance of all duties and responsibilities of assigned associates.
  • Role model outstanding friendly customer service.
  • Use good judgment in delegation, assignment, and follow‑up required for efficient performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, shrink, sales, and inventory.
  • Provide recognition of accomplishments and offer constructive counseling when necessary.
  • Treat all coworkers with fairness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ensure associates are properly trained by certified trainers.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Develop product knowledge in all areas of the assigned department.
  • Use RF unit as needed.
  • Retrieve and organize product loads.
  • Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory control to maximize sales and limit shrink issues.
  • Conduct performance appraisals according to company standards.
  • Maintain effective work schedules to meet production and customer service standards and associate needs.
  • Use company tools such as MPP, financial reports, scheduling, ordering and business information systems.
  • Follow operational and merchandising standard practices to maximize profitability, focusing on priority categories.
  • Maintain solid communication within the department and organization.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety and food safety standards.
  • Resolve and limit shrink.
  • Understand department standard practice manual and program manuals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong understanding of store operations and merchandising techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and willingness to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements.
  • Demonstrated good judgment in problem solving, decision making, handling complaints, arbitrating disputes, and resolving grievances.
  • Ability to lead and manage associates across multiple departments.
  • Department manager or equivalent experience.
  • College degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Accreditation as a Certified Food Safety Manager or ability to achieve it within first 90 days.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Use computers and communication systems.
  • Lift up to 20 lbs regularly; up to 60 lbs occasionally.
  • Push/pull up to 40 lbs regularly.
  • Meet established volume and fixed activity standards.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Assist in attaining financial objectives: sales, payroll percent, gross margin, shrink, MPP net percent effectiveness, and control of other expenses.
  • Foster a sales‑driven, consumer‑focused culture through relationship building and promotion of enthusiastic customer awareness.
  • Treat all associates with fairness, dignity and respect; provide recognition and counseling.
  • Maintain store appearance and presentation and ensure product quality.
  • Manage performance of duties and responsibilities of all associates.
  • Make hiring, training, and performance management recommendations.
  • Support development needs of associates.
  • Use good judgment in delegation, assignment, and follow‑up required for efficient store performance.
