Senior Accountant

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

This position is responsible for accurate and timely processing, recording and reconciliation of transactions including but not limited to local and state funds, accounts payable, payroll and grant financial transactions. The role prepares and validates financial statements and related schedules, compiles and analyzes fiscal data for reporting purposes, and works with the grant program manager to track, audit, reconcile and report on grants.

Other duties as assigned are performed as necessary.

Selected candidates will work at either the Williamsburg campus or Hampton campus.

Qualifications
  • Extensive accounting experience with primary or considerable responsibility for month‑end and year‑end closing cycles.
  • Grant accounting experience including compilation, validation, expense analysis, reimbursement, and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Preparation and review of year‑end financial statement schedules with significant responsibility.
  • Subject‑matter expert in the interpretation and application of accounting principles and treatment.
  • Specialized knowledge
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards.
    • Thorough knowledge of Grant Accounting, Grant Reporting, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 2, Part 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.
    • Working knowledge of Higher Education Accounting Standards and federal, state, and local regulations.
    • In‑depth understanding of month‑ and year‑end accounting cycles and processes for revenue, accounts receivable, procurement, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, cash management, financial statement preparation, and external audits and reviews.
  • Skills
    • Strong organizational, time‑management and critical‑thinking skills.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and systems, including Microsoft Office Suite with advanced Excel ability.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication competence.
  • Ability
    • Apply comprehensive accounting knowledge to produce complete, accurate, and timely financial information.
    • Leverage accounting and grant knowledge to inform sound financial decisions.
    • Manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing needs, and consistently meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Analyze complex financial data, perform reconciliations, and reach accurate conclusions.
    • Present moderately complex financial information to diverse audiences in an understandable format.
    • Identify opportunities to improve internal controls and processes.
    • Count on confidentiality, trust, reliability, and strong relationships across the college.
    • Work independently or with minimal supervision while maintaining high accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local policies.
Additional Considerations
  • Relevant accounting working experience within a higher education, governmental, or not‑for‑profit setting.
