Overview
The purpose of this class is to perform a wide variety of coordination, administrative, and technical support duties related to fleet operations, vehicle maintenance and repairs, and emergency management support for the Hampton Sheriff’s Office. The Fleet Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Logistics & Facilities Manager and ensures fleet readiness, compliance with policies, and efficient use of vehicular assets.
The incumbent demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service, operational readiness, and organizational effectiveness. This position may serve as a lead worker and is appointed at-will pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia.
- Coordinate vehicle maintenance, repairs, inspections, fueling, and cleaning
- Ensure compliance with preventive maintenance schedules and fleet policies
- Track fleet data, reports, and documentation using computerized systems
- Manage DMV registrations and vehicle assignments
- Support emergency operations, continuity of service, and weather response plans
- Monitor fleet readiness, availability, and uptime
- Serve as a lead worker and assist with accreditation and compliance efforts
- Graduation from high school or successful completion of a GED. An Associate’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in fleet management, facilities coordination, or a related field.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must successfully pass a criminal history and background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
- This position is safety-sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s substance abuse policy.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record based on City of Hampton criteria.
- The incumbent may be designated as essential personnel during emergencies and may be required to work extended hours, unusual schedules, and be subject to 24‑hour call‑back.
- To complete the required Authorization for Release of Information form.
