Public Works/Drainage - Construction Inspector
Job Description
Join the City of Hampton as a Construction Inspector in the Drainage division of our Public Works department and help protect local waterways and the environment through effective stormwater management. This position performs a variety of site inspections to ensure compliance with the City’s Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Working under general supervision, you will evaluate construction and development sites, document findings, provide guidance on compliance requirements, and help safeguard water quality throughout the community.

Minimum Requirements- High school graduation or successful completion of GED.
- Minimum of one (1) year work experience in stormwater construction projects.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the construction, engineering, surveying or related field.
- Considerable knowledge of local and state construction and environmental codes and regulations.
- Some vocational training or college level courses in civil engineering, surveying or related field preferred.
- Training in riparian areas or construction of shoreline structures preferred.
- Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sediment Control Certification at time of employment.
- Certification from DEQ for Stormwater Inspector required within one (1) year of employment.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
- Position is safety sensitive and subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Some duties performed outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- May be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
