We are seeking a passionate, motivated, and industry-experienced Cosmetology Instructor to join our Career and Technical Education team. This position provides students with engaging classroom instruction and hands‑on salon laboratory experience designed to prepare them for the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam and successful careers in the beauty industry.

The ideal candidate is energetic, student‑focused, up‑to‑date on industry trends, and committed to creating a positive learning environment where students develop technical skills, professionalism, leadership, and career readiness.

Position Overview

The Cosmetology Instructor teaches 11th and 12th‑grade students in a competency‑based cosmetology program. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands‑on laboratory training in preparation for licensure as a Virginia Cosmetologist. Classes meet daily during the school year.

This role requires an instructor who can motivate students, build meaningful industry connections, and create engaging learning experiences that prepare students for both state licensure and employment in the cosmetology industry.

Essential Functions Instruction & Student Engagement
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to 11th and 12th grade students.
  • Teach and demonstrate skills in hair cutting, styling, chemical services, skin care, nail care, safety and sanitation, salon/shop management, professionalism, and client communication.
  • Prepare students for the Virginia State Board Cosmetology licensing exam and industry employment.
  • Connect current instruction to past and future learning experiences, cross‑curricular content, and real‑world salon applications.
  • Plan and implement curriculum aligned with Virginia State Competencies and licensing requirements in a clear, sequential manner.
  • Develop engaging lessons and instructional materials that challenge and motivate students while reflecting cultural diversity and inclusive practices.
  • Provide learning experiences that actively involve students and build upon individual strengths and learning styles.
  • Incorporate instructional technology and industry‑relevant teaching practices into the learning environment.
Classroom & Laboratory Management
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional classroom and salon laboratory environment.
  • Implement classroom management and safety procedures that foster a positive atmosphere for students and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, and licensing regulations.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect equipment, materials, tools, and facilities.
Assessment & Student Support
  • Utilize pre‑assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction.
  • Assist students in setting learning goals, tracking progress, and reflecting on their work.
  • Maintain accurate records, grades, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Support students in developing effective study habits, professionalism, leadership, and workplace readiness skills.
Career & Community Connections
  • Work with students in their Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) and vocational leadership activities.
  • Develop school/business partnerships and participate in advisory committee activities.
  • Promote the cosmetology program positively within the school and community.
  • Provide opportunities for students to participate in school and community cosmetology service experiences.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain current licensure and/or certification at the state and national levels as applicable.
  • Participate in professional development, industry training, and professional organizations.
  • Collaborate professionally with administrators, staff, students, parents, and community partners.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Virginia Cosmetology License through DPOR
