Job DescriptionVirginia Peninsula Community College is a two‑year institution of higher education in the statewide community college system, serving residents of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
We are seeking an adjunct instructor to teach up to 1,500 hours per year in the Workforce Development Department. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The instructor will be part of a standing pool that the college draws on as scheduling needs dictate, and the appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment. Instruction may occur during the day, evening, or weekend.
This position will instruct students in the NCCER Core, Electrical Levels 1 and 2 courses and directly support the Workforce Development Residential Marine Electrician program. Responsibilities include teaching basic hand tools, ruler reading, cableway and cable installation, cable cut‑in and hook‑up practices (USN style receptacles, lighting, power distribution boxes, single, 3‑phase and connection boxes), electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical safety, and the NNS process for performing an Absence of Voltage check.
The instructor will also maintain program inventories and supplies, prepare and manage instructional materials, monitor laboratory and equipment needs, and establish relationships with the marine electrical industry to ensure training relevance and create job pipelines for graduates. Additional duties may be assigned by the Director.
- Design and deliver instruction for day and evening classes.
- Deliver courses covering residential electrical theory.
- Responsible for student assessment and grading.
- Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
- Provide timely communication with students, staff, and administrators.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Significant work experience in the electrical field.
- Prior experience delivering or developing training.
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student‑centered philosophy supporting academic excellence for diverse learners.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or team member.
- Willingness to serve traditional and non‑traditional students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Apply methods that fairly measure student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly, consistently, and return work promptly to promote learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester by established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience and/or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners to fulfill the college’s mission.
- Must be able to work at all campus locations.
- Community college teaching experience.
- Teaching experience in online, hybrid, or traditional face‑to‑face classroom modalities.
- Demonstrated proficiency and experience using instructional technologies and learning management systems such as Canvas, with the ability to enhance teaching and educational experience with technology.
- Demonstrated ability to measure, assess, and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
