Adjunct Faculty - Degree Emergency Medical Services

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The college is seeking faculty to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and/or up to 8 credit hours during the summer. Applicants will be part of a standing pool from which the college draws scheduling needs. The adjunct appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment, and instruction may be during day, evening, or weekend sessions.

This position will teach courses such as Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Critical Care, Mobile Integrated Healthcare, and Tactical Emergency Medical Support.

Essential Functions
  • Design and deliver instruction for day and evening classes.
  • Responsible for student assessment and grading.
  • Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
  • Provide timely communication with students, staff, and administrators of the college.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Current National Registry certification at Paramedic level or Virginia certification at Paramedic level.
  • Passion for the discipline and a commitment to a student‑centered philosophy in support of academic excellence for diverse learners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
  • Willingness to serve the needs of traditional and non‑traditional students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
  • Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
  • Adopt fair methods to measure student progress toward learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and return work promptly to promote maximum learning.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience and/or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners to fulfill the college’s mission to change lives and empower students to succeed.
  • Must be able to work at all campus locations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Current certification as a Virginia EMS Education Coordinator.
  • Previous instructional experience in a CoAEMSP accredited EMS program.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Teaching experience in online, hybrid, and traditional face‑to‑face classroom modalities.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies and learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • Ability to measure, assess, and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
