This is an IAMAW Union position – Hourly rate is $37.40 at NASA Langley Research Center. The Facility Operations team needs an Operator to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE). This position reports directly to the Steam Plant supervisor. All work will be performed with a high standard of quality, professionalism, and safety compliance.
Responsibilities- Operate boilers, air compressors, air dryers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
- Observe, interpret, and record readings on gauges, meters, and charts for boiler, boiler subsystems, and other utility systems operations both on‑site and remote.
- Adjust controls to ensure safe and efficient boiler operations and to meet demands for steam and high‑temperature water.
- Maintain main and auxiliary machinery and equipment in good working order.
- Perform operator maintenance, including lubricating, and emergency/minor repairs.
- Assist maintenance personnel during facility outages for repairs to boiler room equipment including pumps, valves, piping, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Conduct administrative duties such as typing, filing and generating reports, and assist with the development of SOPs, drawings, and ISO documents.
- Work off‑shift or rotating shift environments, including weekends and holidays as required.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- ASOPE or NUILPE Operating Engineer's license required, or 8 years of work experience plus an apprenticeship or equivalent training period in a designated field, craft, or trade that can be documented by a certificate or diploma from a reputable organization, military, school, or trade school program.
- Test environment (90%):
May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals, and industrial facilities. - Travel between various facilities and during test operations (10%):
May bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment operation. - Respond to equipment failures requiring climbing straight ladders (fixed) and operating large hand valves with or without chain operator (2%).
- Visual and physical contact of test related systems, hardware, articles.
- Requires climbing, crawling, bending, and body mobility.
- Lifting, carrying, exerting pressure up to 35 lbs.
- Ability to distinguish basic colors.
- Corrected vision – 100%.
- Hearing – 100%.
- Boilers, air compressors, air dryers, pumps, fans, turbines, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Regular attendance mandatory – 100%.
- Overtime/work outside normal schedule required – 20%.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Valid Real identification.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance if required.
- Must work in a team atmosphere and demonstrate professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety/risk hazard to the employee or others.
- Must balance scope, schedule, and budget to ensure program success.
- Employees will exercise diligence when developing a Safe Plan of Action (SPA) for each task performed.
