Job Overview

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) seeks a Senior Research Scientist specializing in satellite lidar remote sensing to support the NASA Falcon‑Lidar Project. The role focuses on developing and validating algorithms for a dual‑wavelength, polarization‑sensitive elastic back scatter lidar mission, targeting atmospheric aerosols and clouds to improve weather and air‑quality predictions. Salary range: $125,000–$150,000, commensurate with education and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead development, implementation, testing, documentation (ATBD), and validation of Level1 532nm attenuated back scatter calibration algorithms.
  • Lead development, implementation, testing, documentation (ATBD), and validation of Level1 532nm depolarization calibration algorithms.
  • Support design, development, testing, documentation (ATBD), and validation of Level2 aerosol and cloud extinction retrieval algorithms.
  • Support design, development, testing, documentation (ATBD), and validation of Level2 feature detection and classification algorithms for the Falcon‑Lidar mission.
  • Mission & Systems Support: support Mission and Ground Segment Operations and concept design for spaceborne lidar systems.
  • Participate in mission‑level reviews and technical meetings; deliver documentation.
  • Collaborate and communicate within a multidisciplinary team, present research at scientific meetings and conferences, and travel occasionally to domestic and international venues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or related physical sciences.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in developing and validating aerosol/cloud retrieval algorithms from spaceborne lidar.
  • Scientific analysis of lidar measurements with a peer‑reviewed publication record.
  • Experience with lidar calibration techniques, algorithm development, and data product validation.
  • Extensive experience with CALIPSO, ALICAT, and Earth

    CARE lidar data products (highly desired).
  • Deep understanding of operational ground data processing systems for spaceborne lidar missions.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming using Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • U.S. Person status required.
