Designer – 3D Designer for Virginia Class Submarine Model Conversion
Genesis Staffing is seeking experienced 3D Designers to support Virginia Class submarine model conversion projects in Newport News, VA. This position plays a critical role in converting and developing 3D shipbuilding models within Siemens NX to support manufacturing and production operations.
The Designer RoleThe Designer will work across multiple shipbuilding disciplines including structural, piping, electrical, ventilation, mechanical, and sheet metal systems. This is a hands‑on design role requiring practical modeling experience, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to work independently within a fast‑paced production environment.
This is not a drafting‑only position. Candidates must possess strong 3D design experience and a solid understanding of manufacturing support and shipbuilding design processes.
Key Responsibilities- Convert existing 3D shipbuilding models into Siemens NX, including setup of construction views and model organization
- Develop, modify, and improve designs to support manufacturing efficiency and production requirements
- Create and maintain 3D models across multiple disciplines including:
- Structural
- Electrical
- Mechanical
- Piping
- Ventilation
- Sheet Metal
- Generate manufacturing and installation drawings from 3D models
- Utilize CAD/CAM software including Siemens NX, CATIA, and related design tools
- Interpret engineering requirements, specifications, and technical documentation
- Develop layouts, sketches, studies, and design proposals to support ship construction
- Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, planning, and materials teams to ensure design accuracy and producibility
- Ensure all designs comply with contractual requirements, material availability, and production standards
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within shipbuilding design and manufacturing operations
- Associate’s Degree with 3 years of related design experience
- OR 2 years of directly related experience in lieu of degree
- OR 4 years of non‑related experience in lieu of degree
- OR Completion of an Apprentice Program or Navy Nuclear Power School
- Experience with 3D modeling and design software
- Proficiency with Siemens NX, CATIA, Inventor, or similar CAD platforms
- Experience supporting manufacturing and installation drawing creation
- Ability to work independently on standard design assignments
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work in a production‑driven, fast‑paced environment
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and design for producibility
- Shipbuilding or submarine design experience
- Experience supporting naval or defense programs
- Familiarity with Virginia Class submarine programs
- Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial production environment
- 100% On‑Site Position – Newport News, VA
