Job Summary

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA) is seeking a Mechanisms Subject Matter Expert (SME) Engineer with experience in polymer chemistry and mechanism development, to work in Hampton, VA. Salary range: $100,000—$150,000. The role involves development and review of mechanism design, qualification and acceptance test plans, design and review of polymer adhesives for space environments, and support for aerospace vehicle mechanism systems and test articles.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Review mechanism qualification and acceptance plans and reports.
  • Support laboratory testing of structural concepts, including mechanical testing of components and robotic assembly of structures.
  • Design and execute test plans, set‑up, execution, data collection, and analysis.
  • Provide CAD design and sizing of components for mechanism systems used on spaceflight hardware.
  • Apply subject‑matter expertise in joining techniques, interface and joint design, material development, polymer chemistry, manufacturing methods, and testing.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and other documentation.
  • Provide clear comments and guidance for qualification and acceptance plans and reports.
  • Attend meetings and teleconferences to discuss design, qualification and acceptance issues.
  • Define the load environment of mechanism systems.
  • Oversee all testing of mechanism systems.
Required Qualifications
  • For staff‑level Mechanical Engineers:
    Bachelor’s (or equivalent) with 2‑4 years of experience, or a Master’s with 0‑2 years of experience in aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering.
  • For senior‑level Mechanical Engineers:
    Bachelor’s (or equivalent) with 5‑7 years of experience, or a Master’s with 3‑5 years of experience in aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering.
  • Knowledge of mechanism acceptance standards for spaceflight applications.
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry and its uses in mechanism development.
  • Demonstrated experience in CAD design and sizing of components for mechanism systems.
  • Ability to travel to testing sites as needed.
  • U.S. citizenship is required. (Permanent residence may be considered under the same conditions.)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with Creo/ProE mechanisms is preferred.
