Roman Catholic Music Director Pianist or Guitarist at Music Ministry International Hampton, VA
Responsibilities
- Perform for all regularly scheduled Masses or Services, choir rehearsals, congregation rehearsals, and additional services as requested by the Catholic Priest or Contract Officer, including special chapel functions and other special services.
- Follow 633 ABW/HC operating instructions for use and care of buildings and equipment.
- Coordinate all support requirements with the Catholic Priest or his designee.
- Prepare and conduct rehearsals for instrumentalists and singers for each service.
- Teach new music to the congregation before each service as directed by the Catholic Chaplain.
- Lead congregational singing, provide instrumental accompaniment, identify and train a cantor for leading the congregation in song, and for singing the Responsorial Song and Gospel Acclamations.
- Recruit instrumentalists, choir members, and cantors for the choir.
- Maintain communication with choir members, instrumentalists, the Catholic Priest, and the priest celebrant of the Mass.
- Attend quarterly, or more often if needed, liturgical planning meetings.
- Be aware that performance may require access to Privacy Information and must adhere to the Privacy Act, Title 5 of the U.S. Code, Section 552a, and applicable agency rules and guidance.
- Perform the services personally or coordinate with a substitute of equal or higher proficiency approved in advance by the Catholic Priest/Chaplain. Submit names and qualifications of proposed submusicians at least fourteen (14) days prior to the absence. Submusicians must meet the position requirements described in the Statement of Work (SOW). Musicians are responsible for payment of the substitute.
- Handle all self‑employment responsibilities, including payment of Social Security, Federal or local income taxes, and State unemployment insurance premiums for themselves and any subcontractors used.
- Possess accompanist ability on an instrument (keyboard and/or guitar) appropriate to Catholic liturgical settings.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and select appropriate contemporary Catholic liturgical music within the guidelines provided by the Catholic Priest.
- Have familiarity with the elements and flow of Catholic Liturgy.
- Be adaptable and willing to accept the supervision, guidance, and decisions of the Catholic priest responsible for all aspects of the liturgy.
- Be capable of analyzing Scriptural readings for themes and consult with the Catholic Priest regarding the theme for each Mass and homily. The selected music should enhance and enrich the message of the Mass and homily.
- Submission of a CD representing the music that will be used at Mass and/or audition may be required.

: 0900 Catholic Mass at Bethel Manor Chapel, Langley AFB Chapel, or other assigned location.

Services normally one hour to ninety minutes in length. Practice sessions/rehearsals will be held prior to each service at a time determined by the Musician, with the approval of the Catholic Priest/Chaplain. Special Masses, services, and practice sessions for those occasions are in addition to the normal weekly work units.
