Become a vital part of the City of Hampton's Police Division as a School Resource Officer (SRO), where your work will make a meaningful impact in the lives of students and staff. We're seeking certified law enforcement professionals who are committed to fostering a safe, secure, and positive learning environment within Hampton City Schools. As a School Resource Officer, you will patrol an assigned district during one of three shifts, enforcing City of Hampton and Commonwealth of Virginia laws and ordinances.

Your presence in the schools will be integral to maintaining safety and building trust with students, staff, and families. In addition to patrol duties, you'll serve as a mentor, educator, and liaison between the Police Division and the school community.

Minimum Requirements

* Employee must have been certified as a Police Officer as defined in Virginia Code: 9.1-101 for at least two years.

* Must be able to function in stressful situations and to exercise good judgment under potentially volatile conditions; able to read and understand laws, policies, rules and regulations and procedures, and to follow written and oral directions; must be highly motivated, self-supervising, productive and able to adopt a flexible work schedule. proven ability to positively interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations

Internal Candidates

* Application must be endorsed by their current Unit Commander and must have "achieved" a three (3) or above on their most recent performance evaluation; must score eighty (80) or higher on Division firearm qualifications;
Minimum of two (2) years as a Certified Officer with HPD at time of appointment;
Applicant shall not have had any suspensions during the twelve (12) months preceding the application.

* Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

* This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.

* Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

Additional Requirements

* May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends.

* Requires frequent travel throughout the city and be rotated to any Police Officer position within the Police Division

* Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance. A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination.

* The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.

What YOU will be doing:

* Perform general duties as outlined for the Police/ Patrol Officer position as required.

* Maintains a working knowledge of juvenile law and school administrative policies. Enforces laws and ordinances relating to schools and juveniles.

* Establishes and maintains a working partnership with school administrators. Provides information to school administrators, Division personnel, and other school resource officers when appropriate.

* Establishes and maintains a rapport with students. Provide guidance to students and parents seeking assistance with law enforcement concerns. Make referrals to other agencies such as Social Services or Intake when appropriate.

* Apply alternative means to resolving conflict in lieu of arrest when appropriate.

* Coordinate with the Hampton City Schools to identify priorities.
