The City of Hampton is seeking a dedicated and safety-focused professional to perform skilled traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, and guardrails. This position plays a critical role in supporting traffic operations, public safety, and emergency response efforts throughout the City.
The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in traffic operations, a solid working knowledge of tools and equipment, and the ability to work effectively with the public and fellow team members. This role requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, as work may occur in challenging conditions and outside of standard work hours.

- High school diploma or GED
- Strong experience in traffic operations required; some experience in Thermo-Plastic pavement markings is preferred; strong knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, mechanics or painting; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
- Must have the ability to be IMSA Signs and Marking certified and do so within 1 year of hire date; work zone certified within 6 months of hire date.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
- Must have or obtain a Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
- Frequent contact with the general public and other city employees.
- May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Work conditions can be disagreeable and potentially dangerous.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
