The City of Hampton is seeking a strategic and experienced leader to serve as Deputy Director of Economic Development. This key leadership role partners closely with the Director to drive the City’s economic development vision—supporting business growth, capital investment, and job creation while overseeing day-to-day departmental operations.
What You’ll Do- Assist the Director in setting departmental goals, priorities, and economic development strategies
- Lead business attraction, retention, and expansion initiatives
- Develop and analyze economic incentive proposals and development projects
- Oversee economic development data management, reporting, and project tracking
- Support the Hampton Economic Development Authority (EDA) and prepare reports and presentations
- Supervise and develop staff; manage budgets and review contracts and legal documents
- Represent the department with internal teams, regional partners, and external stakeholders
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Urban Planning, Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- 10 years of progressively responsible related experience that includes significant management and supervisory experience in an economic development organization is preferred.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
- Requires some travel, and the incumbent must maintain a valid passport for international travel.
- Requires working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights and weekends.
- Requires frequent contact with the city’s executive leadership team, EDA, business community, the Hampton Roads Alliance, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and other governmental agencies.
