The purpose of the class is to provide practical nursing care to incarcerated individuals in a correctional environment. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) contributes to the nursing process through ongoing data collection, health assessments, documentation, medication administration, patient education, and implementation of physician orders. Work is performed in a team relationship with a Registered Nurse and under the direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator.
The position requires adherence to established medical, safety, security, and infection control policies and procedures. Pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia, the incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. This position is non‑exempt.
- Provide practical nursing care, including health assessments, medication administration, and patient education
- Respond to medical emergencies and perform CPR as required
- Carry out and document the physician and dentist orders accurately
- Assist with medical exams, treatments, and specimen collection
- Maintain precise, confidential medical records
- Follow infection control, safety, and security protocols at all times
- Work collaboratively with healthcare and correctional staff in a fast-paced setting
- Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing Program and current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in correctional, emergency, or acute care nursing is preferred.
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with City of Hampton criteria, if required by assignment.
- Must maintain a valid and active Licensed Practical Nurse license in Virginia.
- Must maintain current CPR certification.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may require long hours and unusual schedules.
- Must be in good physical health and able to function effectively in a stressful correctional environment.
