Summary
The Registered Nurse delivers fundamental knowledge‑based nursing care to Veterans in the Specialty Care Outpatient setting. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care; coordinating care with the interdisciplinary team; administering medications and treatments; and providing patient education to promote optimal health outcomes.
Qualifications- English language proficiency:
Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. - Educational credentials:
Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE) or a recognized equivalency evaluation for foreign education. - Licensure:
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration in the United States (or District of Columbia) to serve in direct patient care positions. - Bridge program eligibility:
Individuals in a master’s level bridge program may be appointed temporarily and later converted to a permanent appointment upon completion. - Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception:
Candidates who otherwise meet education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed on a 120‑day temporary basis while actively pursuing licensure. - Grade determination:
Grade and level will be assigned based on education, experience, and dimension requirements (Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, Evidence‑Based Practice/Research). - Preferred experience:
1‑2 years of surgical procedures or outpatient clinic experience.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting up to 8 hours.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and reach above shoulder up to 45 lbs.
- Repeat bending and use of fingers and both hands/legs for extended periods.
- Rapid mental and muscular coordination; ability to perform at least 8 hours of repetitive tasks.
- Correctable vision 20/40 in one eye; basic color vision; hearing with hearing aid permitted.
- May be exposed to combative patients due to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
- Must complete mandatory annual Employee Health requirements.
- Deliver comprehensive veteran‑centered nursing care in a multidisciplinary outpatient setting.
- Assess, plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate individualized nursing care for Veterans.
- Perform patient triage, including walk‑in assessments, and collaborate with providers to determine appropriate plans of care.
- Coordinate care across the continuum through collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
- Provide patient and family education related to disease management, medications, preventive care, and healthy‑lifestyle practices.
- Administer medications and treatments, including intravenous therapies, hydration, blood products, biologics, and other prescribed treatments per VA policies.
- Assist providers during specialty procedures and perform treatments within scope of practice.
- Conduct nurse visits, monitor patient progress, and accurately document care in the electronic health record.
- Participate in daily huddles, schedule management, clinic readiness, accreditation preparation, and Environment of Care initiatives.
- Promote evidence‑based practice, patient safety, infection prevention, and continuous quality improvement.
- Maintain effective communication with Veterans, families, providers, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure coordinated patient‑centered care.
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and adherence to VA nursing standards while providing exceptional customer service.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
