Become a vital part of the City of Hampton’s Police Division as a School Resource Officer (SRO). Your work will make a meaningful impact in the lives of students and staff. We’re seeking certified law enforcement professionals who are committed to fostering a safe, secure, and positive learning environment within Hampton City Schools.

Responsibilities
  • Perform general duties as outlined for the Police/Patrol Officer position as required.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of juvenile law and school administrative policies; enforce laws and ordinances relating to schools and juveniles.
  • Establish and maintain a working partnership with school administrators; provide information to school administrators, Division personnel, and other school resource officers when appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain a rapport with students; provide guidance to students and parents seeking assistance with law enforcement concerns; make referrals to other agencies such as Social Services or Intake when appropriate.
  • Apply alternative means to resolving conflict in lieu of arrest when appropriate.
  • Coordinate with the Hampton City Schools to identify priorities.
  • Acknowledge radio transmissions relaying citizens’ complaints and proceed to location.
  • Respond to complaints such as child abuse, fights, vandalism, etc.; take necessary corrective actions, investigate missing persons, watch for runaways and truants, and disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings.
  • Attend various school functions such as athletic events and dances, and attend meetings as needed.
  • Provide or coordinate classroom instruction on law enforcement‑related topics.
  • Assist elementary school authorities with the student safety patrol program.
  • Patrol Hampton City Schools and event locations within the City of Hampton using a patrol car or on foot to prevent crime or disturbance of peace and arrest violators; familiarize self with housing, businesses and persons within the district.
  • Note suspicious persons and unusual conditions and make preliminary investigations.
  • Examine premises of unoccupied buildings and check doors and windows for security; report hazards that endanger public safety such as malfunctioning traffic signals or damaged utility structures.
  • Serve warrants and summonses; arrest violators of misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Make reports of events leading to and surrounding arrests.
  • Confere with the Commonwealth’s Attorney to coordinate courtroom testimony; appear in court as arresting officer.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned to ensure successful completion of the Division’s mission.
Minimum Requirements
  • Employee must have been certified as a Police Officer as defined in Virginia Code: 9.1‑101 for at least two years.
  • Must be able to function in stressful situations and exercise good judgment under potentially volatile conditions; read and understand laws, policies, rules and regulations, and procedures; follow written and oral directions; be highly motivated, self‑supervising, productive and able to adopt a flexible work schedule.
  • Have proven ability to positively interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
Internal Candidates
  • Application must be endorsed by current Unit Commander and have achieved at least a three (3) on most recent performance evaluation.
  • Must score eighty (80) or higher on Division firearm qualifications.
  • Minimum of two (2) years as a Certified Officer with HPD at time of appointment.
  • Applicant shall not have had any suspensions during the twelve (12) months preceding the application.
  • Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
