Role Summary
This community-driven role patrols an assigned district during one of two shifts to enforce city ordinances and Virginia statutes. Employees may be assigned to various units within the Hampton Police Division.
Responsibilities- Patrol an assigned district within the City of Hampton using a patrol car or on foot to prevent crime and disturb the peace, and arrest violators.
- Become familiar with housing, businesses, and residents within the district; observe suspicious persons and conditions and conduct preliminary investigations.
- Examine unoccupied buildings and check doors and windows for security; report hazards such as malfunctioning traffic signals or damaged utility structures.
- Receive supervision from senior officers and participate in daily evaluations.
- May be rotated to other Patrol Officer positions, complete follow‑up investigations, or perform duties in other units as required.
- Upon completion of required on‑the‑job training and probationary period, eligible for promotional opportunities and specialized assignments.
- Transferable years of service up to ten (10) years (note: years of service must have been in a comparable position).
- Salary may be equivalent to that of an officer with the same total years of service based on transferable years of service.
- Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certified Police Officer.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of a GED; college‑level coursework in Police Science or related field preferred.
- At least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Must pass the City physical examination (including drug screen), background investigation (including polygraph), physical agility exam, written test, and psychological testing.
- Demonstrated courtesy, firmness with the public, alertness, ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, strong observation and memory skills, excellent moral character, and good physical condition.
- Ability to provide credible testimony in court and to magistrate in other relevant situations.
This position is non-exempt.
