Function
The purpose of this class is to monitor and control security operations within court and detention facilities by operating electronic security systems, controlling inmate movement, maintaining security logs and records, monitoring alarms and surveillance equipment, and ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff, visitors, and court personnel. Incumbents perform security-related duties under the supervision of a Sergeant and are responsible for maintaining constant awareness of facility operations and responding appropriately to emergencies.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Monitor surveillance cameras, alarms, electronic doors, gates, locks, and intercom systems.
- Control inmate movement and maintain security within restricted areas.
- Screen visitors, staff, and vehicles entering secure facilities.
- Maintain accurate logs, reports, inmate movement records, and security documentation.
- Respond to security incidents and communicate with deputies, supervisors, and emergency personnel.
- Issue and track facility keys, radios, and security equipment.
- Observe and report unusual inmate behavior, medical concerns, or security risks.
- Conduct routine security checks and ensure proper operation of control center equipment.
- Maintain confidentiality while following all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
Minimum requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, experience in corrections, law enforcement, dispatching, security operations, or a related field, Dispatch Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VDCJS), passing a background check, and a valid driver's license. Additional requirements may include being considered "essential personnel" during city emergencies.
