Mechanic, Trades ​/ Skilled Labor

Essential Job Functions

• Maintain proficiency in the diagnosis and repair of all HRT vehicles.
• Ensure accurate diagnosis and effective repair or replacement of components necessary for proper functioning of assigned equipment using advanced diagnostic equipment.
• Effectively and efficiently perform preventive maintenance inspections.
• Ensure the timely repair of any problems identified during maintenance activities.
• Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing fuel delivery systems, engines, transmissions, vehicle air conditioning units, wheelchair lifts, electronic systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical and lighting systems, brake systems, hybrid systems, and transmission and driveline systems.
• Conduct road testing of vehicles to ensure safety and quality of work performed.
• Mix and properly apply base coat and clear coat finish to vehicles and sub‑assemblies, and demonstrate proper burning and welding techniques.
• Use maintenance documentation and online services.
• Adhere to the highest quality standards and meet or exceed OEM requirements in all job responsibilities.
• Advise supervisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time frame.
• Operate forklifts and perform other maintenance duties or assignments as requested.
• Utilize Windows and other computer programs.

• Interact effectively, courteously, and professionally with operations department employees and other HRT employees regarding vehicle repairs and other shop business.
• Assume primary responsibility for assigned projects and complete all required written and/or automated work orders and other documentation.
• Report equipment abuse or component tampering to the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Train other HRT employees in safe and efficient fleet maintenance and proper operation of required maintenance equipment and tooling.
• Be involved in the daily operation of the shop and fill in during the absence of the supervisor.
• Interpret maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, electronic schematics, ladder logic, and other documents and safely operate all company equipment.
• Manage records in compliance with HRT Records Management Policies and Procedures.

• Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with HRT/OSHA standards.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and safely use all power and hand‑held mechanic tools.
• Maintain awareness and compliance with all current regulations regarding hazardous waste handling and disposal.
• Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures and policies.
• Report unsafe conditions and hazards to supervisor, manager, or Safety Department.

• High school diploma or GED required; trade school preferred.
• Five (5) years of heavy‑duty mechanical experience within the past ten (10) years or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in diagnosis and repair of all HRT vehicles and ability to read/comprehend written and electronic service information.
• Completion of the Employee qualification requirements for the Mechanic II position before moving to the Mechanic I classification.
• CDL Class B license and/or CDL Permit with ability to obtain a valid Virginia CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements within sixty (60) days of employment.
• EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification within ninety (90) working days post‑hire.
• Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
• Pass DOT physical examination and meet night vision requirements.
• Pass HRT’s written and technical skills assessment(s) prior to moving to the Mechanic I classification.
• Meet ongoing educational, training, and DOT requirements to retain employment.
• Pass federal government background screening for local military installation access.

Non‑Exempt.

• Lift 80 lbs and stand, walk, squat, twist, and reach for prolonged periods.
• Excellent night vision required.

• Work in all weather conditions and all work shifts including weekends and holidays.
• Variable shifts and overtime mandatory to meet service demands.
• Possible overtime required.
