SummaryPerforms skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and for emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.
Minimum Qualifications- Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate tank endorsement.
- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meets minimum standards set by the Department of Transportation.
- Commercial Driver’s License medical card (or already employed by the State of New Hampshire).
- Negative result on pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen as required by Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT.
- Ability to lift or carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent or regular basis.
- Availability via telephone or other acceptable means of communication 24 hours per day.
Candidates holding a valid CDL‑B with ability to obtain a CDL‑A with appropriate endorsements within one year of hire and otherwise satisfying the minimum requirements may be considered for trainee status.

- Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and/or vehicle components used in the construction and maintenance of the State Highway System, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, and seasonal road surface treatments.
- Maintain assigned equipment and perform field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting to keep equipment serviceable and operating optimally.
- Observe winter storm conditions and independently determine appropriate actions for plowing, spreading abrasives or chemicals, in accordance with Department safety and environmental policies; train and supervise entry‑level personnel in road condition efforts.
- Supervise, train, and review the work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors to ensure safe and environmentally compliant maintenance practices; collaborate with the supervising officer to address personnel issues and recommend improvements in equipment and operations.
- Perform routine highway and road maintenance activities under adverse conditions, including exposure to high‑speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations.
- Traverse varying terrain and perform tasks involving heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building, and equipment maintenance/repair, lifting or carrying material up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Respond immediately to perform winter maintenance or other traffic emergency activities on a 24‑hour per year basis.
