Director of the Multilingual Learner Department (MLD)

Job Summary:

The ML Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching and providing feedback to teachers/parapros by focusing on individual and group professional development that will expand and refine the understanding of effective researched-based instruction. The ML Instructional Coach focuses on enhancing teachers' ability to provide instruction that uses Michigan Academic Standards (MAS) to define what content to teach, while using WIDA Standards to define how language is scaffolded for MLs to access that content.

The ML Instructional Coach will provide personalized support that is based on the goals and identified needs of individual instructional staff. The role of the ML Instructional Coach will be to promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration and common issues of concern. The ML Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching and providing feedback to teachers.

Through a collaborative coaching cycle, the ML Instructional Coach empowers teachers to refine their practice, expand their pedagogical skills, and create rigorous, engaging learning experiences for all students. With a strong foundation in pedagogy around language acquisition, content knowledge, and interpersonal skills, the Instructional Coach plays a vital role in building teacher capacity and ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for success.

Job Goals:

  • Support the HPS ML instructional program
  • Support teaching/parapros in effective implementation of ML strategies
  • Participate in district and school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups
  • Build teacher/parapros capacity in delivering rigorous, standards-aligned, data-driven instruction to meet the needs of all learners
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and shared accountability among teachers and staff
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and central office, ensuring that teachers/parapros have the knowledge, resources, and support needed to put key ML priorities into practice

Qualifications:

  • Holds a valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with an ESL or Bilingual Endorsement
  • Holds a valid State of Michigan School Administrator Certificate
  • Has a background in providing professional development through workshops and/or mentoring
  • Has experience and knowledge regarding language acquisition strategies, MAS, WIDA Standards and WIDA ACCESS administration
  • Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience with MLs, economically disadvantaged and other high needs populations
  • Strong planning and organizations skills with the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Formal or intensive in-service training related to English language development and instructional practices for MLs
  • Demonstrated ability to transfer research and evidence-based instructional strategies, including strategies to increase language production, into classroom instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instruction and curriculum development, current theory, instructional practices, and various assessment strategies
  • Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community
  • Expertise in co-teaching and adult learning theory
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of methods in working with adult learners
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with colleagues and administration

Major

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in coaching, training, and activities to implement ML instructional coaching practices with teachers
  • Provides individualized ML coaching and support to teachers/parapros through regular observation, feedback, co-planning, modeling, and co-teaching
  • Works collaboratively with members of the school staff to implement, strengthen, and support language-rich instruction
  • Facilitates staff training and provides recommendations on instructional strategies for aiding students in accessing content standards while learning English
  • Supports staff compliance with state and federal laws (e.g., Office of Civil Rights, Title III, Sec. 41, etc.)
  • Supports staff in WIDA and assessment security training
