ML Instructional Coach

The ML Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to teachers/parapros by focusing on individual and group professional development that will expand and refine the understanding of effective researched-based instruction. The ML Instructional Coach focuses on enhancing teachers' ability to provide instruction that uses Michigan Academic Standards (MAS) to define what content to teach, while using WIDA Standards to define how language is scaffolded for MLs to access that content.

The ML Instructional Coach will provide personalized support that is based on the goals and identified needs of individual instructional staff. The role of the ML Instructional Coach will be to promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues of concern.

The ML Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to teachers. Through a collaborative coaching cycle, the ML Instructional Coach empowers teachers to refine their practice, expand their pedagogical skills, and create rigorous, engaging learning experiences for all students. With a strong foundation in pedagogy around language acquisition, content knowledge, and interpersonal skills, the Instructional Coach plays a vital role in building teacher capacity and ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for success.

The job goals include supporting the HPS ML instructional program, supporting teaching/parapros in effective implementation of ML strategies, participating in district and school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees, and other school system groups, building teacher/parapros capacity in delivering rigorous, standards-aligned, data-driven instruction to meet the needs of all learners, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and shared accountability among teachers and staff, and serving as a liaison between the school and central office.

Qualifications include holding a valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with an ESL or Bilingual Endorsement, having a background in providing professional development through workshops and/or mentoring, having experience and knowledge regarding language acquisition strategies, MAS, WIDA Standards, and WIDA ACCESS administration, having minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience with MLs, economically disadvantaged, and other high needs populations, having strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, having formal or intensive in-service training related to English language development and instructional practices for MLs, demonstrating ability to transfer research and evidence-based instructional strategies, including strategies to increase language production, into classroom instruction, demonstrating knowledge of instruction and curriculum development, current theory, instructional practices, and various assessment strategies, being able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community, having expertise in co-teaching and adult learning theory, demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrating leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices, having knowledge and understanding of methods in working with adult learners, and demonstrating ability to maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with colleagues and administration.

Major duties and responsibilities include participating in coaching, training, and activities to implement ML instructional coaching practices with teachers, providing individualized ML coaching and support to teachers/parapros through regular observation, feedback, co-planning, modeling, and co-teaching, working collaboratively with members of the school staff to implement, strengthen, and support language-rich instruction, facilitating staff training and providing recommendations on instructional strategies for aiding students in accessing content standards while learning English, supporting staff compliance with state and federal laws, supporting staff in WIDA and assessment security training, utilizing WIDA screening, WIDA ACCESS assessment results, and other available data to prioritize language goals and help classroom and teachers plan English language instruction for all language domains, submitting any pertinent data requests/coaching documentation to the MLD District Facilitator in a…
