Job Summary

In addition to the staff nurse role, the Clinical Coordinator assumes shift responsibilities for the care delivery team. They assist in coordinating the provision of care through assigning and scheduling staff, prioritizing, delegating and evaluating patient care. They assist in evaluating patient care provided by nursing staff, participate in Process Improvement activities, and work with the interdisciplinary team to problem‑solve unit and system issues.

They provide input into nursing staff performance appraisals, assist with staff educational requirements, and participate in activities pertinent to the unit and hospital. The Clinical Coordinator supplements staffing under direction of the Administrative Director and/or Clinical Manager and takes an abbreviated patient care assignment to ensure leadership responsibilities are fulfilled.

  • Functions as lead and resource person for nursing personnel. Acts as a clinical resource person and assists the clinical manager in planning and facilitating staff meetings and staff development.
  • Collaborates with manager in prospective monitoring of the schedule to assure adequate nurse‑patient ratio on a given shift. Reviews monthly schedule, communicates with the staffing office regarding staffing changes.
  • Facilitates shared decision making among staff. Facilitates unit throughput on a given shift to improve LOS (Length of Stay).
  • Coordinates/provides in‑service programs to assist staff in maintaining or enhancing competence based on identified needs.
  • May assist manager with interview, selection, retention, mentoring, and evaluation of staff.
  • Participates in development of policies, procedures and standards for the department.
  • Assists with department Process Improvement and Peer Review.
  • Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree/Diploma required. BSN preferred.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse by the state of Michigan.
  • One to two years of progressively more responsible experience with evidence of increasing leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, delegate to others and facilitate processes.
  • Minimum Level 6 of the Promoting Excellence Performance Criteria, if an internal candidate, preferred.
  • BLS required, ACLS preferred.
