Modern Dance Instructor

Overview

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is seeking a hardworking and dependable candidate. This position offers benefits with the state, including 15 days of annual and sick leave per year or more depending on applicable state service.

The modern dance instructor will advance the mission of identifying and teaching South Carolina's artistically talented high school students through pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. The successful candidate will also advance the school's Outreach mission by serving as a resource for all teachers and students in South Carolina.

• Teach intermediate through advanced modern/contemporary dance technique(s) and related practices.
• Stage existing repertoire and choreograph new works for department demonstrations and performances.
• Coach and prepare students for performances, auditions, and competitions; assist with costume coordination.
• Advise and mentor students in informal settings and in formal course structures such as Senior Audition Preparation and Senior Showcase.
• Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and other events to promote excellence in the department and school.
• Contribute to departmental programming, engage with Admissions and Outreach colleagues, and participate in summer programs.
• Assist with auditions and admissions reviews as requested by the Department Chair or Dean; support student performances and school-wide activities.
• Contribute to ongoing design and implementation of the modern dance curriculum, aligning with state and national standards.

• Possess a bachelor’s degree in the appropriate arts discipline and at least 3 years of teaching experience at the secondary and/or post-secondary level.
• Additional qualifications include a master’s degree with at least 5 years teaching experience in the appropriate arts discipline.
• Performance background with a professional modern or contemporary dance company.
• Advanced knowledge of 20th century modern dance techniques and contemporary dance practices.
• Demonstrated ability to teach one or more of the following: contemporary floor work, modern partnering, movement improvisation, movement composition, somatic practices such as Yoga or Pilates, cross training, dance history, and aspects of production.
• Excellent communication and writing skills; ability to work with public school students, other arts and academic educators, and diverse constituencies and cultures.
