CDL Driver - Fleet Maintenance Specialist
Under direct supervision of the Public Works Director, operates motor vehicles used in the Public Works Department in collection of refuse at curbside and the operation of related collection equipment for brown goods and yard debris.
Assists as a Shop Mechanic and various other maintenance assignments such as replacing street signs, trash cans and lids.
The essential functions listed below are those that represent much of the time spent working in this role. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the role as necessary.
- Operates vehicles such as a refuse truck, Grapple boom truck, Flatbed with lift, and various automobiles and trucks.
- May train and supervise vehicle crews concerning safety, operating signals, and daily vehicle inspection reports.
- Under supervision of Department Head performs both routine and complex maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
- May be called upon to drive a variety of vehicles or work as needed in the event of illness or absence of other drivers.
- May be required to perform routine tasks involving the upkeep of department, buildings, and grounds.
- Performs duties specific to the department to which the individual is assigned.
- This position may be assigned to manage the Drivers and Loaders in the event the PWD Department Head is absent.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
- Knowledge of the geography of the City of Hanahan.
- Knowledge of the procedures to off load materials at the Berkeley County Landfill.
- Knowledge of vehicles common to local government activities gained through reading operators manuals and on the job training.
- Knowledge of South Carolina laws and regulations governing automotive equipment.
- Ability to operate the vehicles safely.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Ability to be reliable in terms of attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers in the delivery of City services by following through on customer requests in a positive, courteous, timely, respectful, and professional manner with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public.
- Managetime and priorities effectively to achieve objectives.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of job and work cooperatively and effectively with customers, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Must be physically able to exert up to 75 pounds, frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid CDL License
