Located in Kings County, Adventist Health Hanford serves the Central Valley with a 173-bed hospital and outpatient clinics. Within an hour’s drive are Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
Job SummaryOrganizes and facilitates the patient while in the Operating Room (OR). Coordinates the overall care of the patient between the surgeon, anesthesiologist and room staff. Functions as a first assistant during surgical incision, excision, and repair of pathology throughout the perioperative period on procedures for which privileges have been granted. Participates in preoperative assessment and planning for selected surgical patients in collaboration with the healthcare team in the preoperative location.
Regularly demonstrates subject matter expertise regarding medication, treatment and patient care standards.
- Performs circulating and scrubbing duties. Verbally confirms surgical site/side before induction of anesthesia. Accurately performs sponge, needle, sharp and instrument counts per department policy. Handles and dissects tissues in collaboration with the surgeon. Clamps blood vessels, coagulates bleeding points, ligates vessels, and performs related tasks with the surgeon. Sutures tissue in collaboration with the surgeon. Places drains as indicated. Assists with cannulation and decannulation as needed.
- Assists with transferring the patient to and from the operating room, positioning, prepping and draping. Maintains aseptic technique and environment. Monitors sterile items before opening and maintains sterility during delivery to the sterile field. Obtains and interprets patient data to determine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed. Develops and implements action plans to enhance patient outcomes.
- Maintains traffic around the sterile field and ensures proper sterilization/disinfection. Prepares instruments according to physician preference and scheduled procedure. Utilizes surgical knowledge to assist the surgeon. Works under minimal supervision.
- Documents nursing diagnoses, patient care plans, interventions and responses, and discharge plans. Mentors and leads staff in patient care settings. Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness where applicable.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN):
Preferred - Two years of perioperative nursing experience:
