This role focuses on setting up, programming, and operating CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components according to blueprints and quality standards. You will perform tooling changes, machine offsets, and first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet exact specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, and operate CNC mills and lathes to machine precision components according to engineering blueprints and specifications.
  • Change out tooling, clamps, and vises, and ensure all work holding devices are correctly installed and secured for each job.
  • Perform machine offsets and zero out machines accurately prior to running production to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Conduct first-piece and through-process quality inspections using micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and other gauging instruments as specified on inspection sheets.
  • Verify that proper gauging and measurement tools are used for each job and confirm they are calibrated and suitable for the intended measurements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and machining requirements for each component.
  • Produce precision components that consistently meet blueprint requirements and quality standards.
  • Perform setups for new components and repeat setups for existing parts, ensuring efficient and accurate changeovers between jobs.
  • Obtain and organize all necessary tooling and fixtures required to complete assigned machining operations.
  • Monitor machines during operation, make adjustments as needed, and identify any issues affecting part quality or machine performance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and procedures.
  • Collaborate with trainers and team members to continuously improve machining techniques, setup efficiency, and overall process quality.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in CNC setups or CNC operating roles.
  • Proficiency in operating CNC mills or CNC lathes in a production environment.
  • Ability to perform own quality checks utilizing micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and various precision gauges.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills with the ability to interpret dimensions, tolerances, and machining requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machine operation, including performing offsets and zeroing out machines.
  • Experience with CNC setup, including tooling changes, fixture installation, and work holding alignment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision machined components.
  • Basic understanding of G and M code-based CNC controls and machining processes.
  • Ability to follow inspection sheets and use specified gauging instruments accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to identify and correct issues in machining and part quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Siemens and Fanuc CNC controls or willingness to learn these control platforms.
  • Formal CNC schooling or a CNC certificate, including candidates with as little as 6 months of practical experience.
  • Interest in learning how to set up various CNC machines, including both mills and lathes.
  • Experience or familiarity with machining for automotive and aerospace applications.
  • Willingness to participate in continuous improvement and education programs to enhance technical and professional skills.
  • Ability to work with state-of-the-art machining and metrology equipment in a high-tech manufacturing environment.
