Position: Army ROTC Military Science Instructor - Temporary Job 1 year

Summary

The Military Science Instructor (MSI) will teach effectively in indoor classroom and field training settings, presenting standardized instruction and creative workshops. Contractor personnel demonstrate instructor ability in military field training exercises and can live/instruct in field environment for extended periods during training.

Essential Functions
  • Provide military science instruction, group and/or individual training, field instruction in accordance with Cadet Command’s program of Instruction (POI), syllabus, and other ROTC-directed training in various settings.
  • Use mixed media and visual aids to teach learning objectives; ensure students are properly tested and can apply theory in practice during training and assessment events.
  • Provide expert training on Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills, small unit tactics, and physical fitness.
  • Coach, teach, and prepare competitive Cadet teams (ranger challenge, drill team, color guard).
  • Instruct Cadets on leader/officer‑to‑NCO relationships in garrison and combat environments.
  • Instruct Cadets on receiving and executing written and verbal plans, concepts, and crisis/contingency management.
  • Support Cadet Summer Training (CST) at Fort Knox, KY for approximately 40 days.
  • Assist Government personnel in marketing and recruiting efforts at events such as freshman orientations and college fairs.
  • Gather information on Cadet prospects and develop marketing handouts for Army ROTC.
  • Participate in student orientation, college fairs, parades, and community outreach events.
  • Provide information to potential Cadets and community leaders about Army ROTC program and career path.
  • Assist with inventory and distribution of supplies.
  • Transport ROTC personnel, Cadets, students, supplies, and materials during training exercises, recruiting, marketing, and sustainment operations. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license, Accident Avoidance, 15‑pax van training, and proof of insurance. Contractor personnel subject to pecuniary liability as per AR 735‑5.
Supervisory responsibilities

This position does not have any direct reports.

Work environment
  • Primarily indoor classroom setting.
  • Some instruction may occur outdoors/offsite (Ranger Challenge, Color Guard, Leadership Labs, Field Training Exercises).
  • Other activities such as recruiting events may require travel and outdoor locations.
Physical demands
  • Speak and communicate clearly.
  • Physically demonstrate activities (field instruction, drills).
  • Operate on uneven terrain during Leadership Labs and Field Training Exercises.
  • Travel by car, van, truck, plane, or other methods to assigned events.
  • Participate in recruiting events and other assigned activities.
Travel required

Yes – travel as needed; overnight travel annually to attend CST.

Required education and experience
  • Have been a Commissioned or Non‑Commissioned Officer within the U.S. Army Active Component or former/current member of the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard. (

    Note:

    Air Force, Marines, Navy, or other branches do not qualify.)
  • Permanent employment: minimum of six (6) years prior Active or Reserve Component military experience.
  • Temporary employment: minimum of four (4) years; six (6) years preferred.
  • Experience must be current (within the last five years at the time of initial assignment) and terminated with an honorable discharge or retirement.
  • Meet academic institution qualifications for instructor positions.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of Army organizational structure, mission objectives, functions, procedures, agency regulations, and policy.
  • Have knowledge/experience of military training and field training evaluations.
  • Know basic Soldier skills (map reading, land navigation, marksmanship, drill and ceremonies, small arms).
  • Know safety skills in small arms, ammunition, and pyrotechnics.
  • Computer skills:
    Microsoft Word, Excel, graphics programs, Windows environments, email, and internet.
  • Teach effectively in classroom and field settings.
  • Demonstrated instructor ability in military field training exercises and able to live/instruct in field environment for extended periods during training.
Work authorization/security clearance requirements

Will be subject to background checks for Positions of Significant Trust and Authority (POSTA).
