Position Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer participates in all aspects of day-to-day operations of the Dartmouth College engineering office. The engineering office strives to provide high quality engineering services for a wide range of projects and clients, including providing review and technical oversight of projects designed by outside consultants, working with Project Managers on in-house design and renovation projects, working with FO&M shops on system upgrades, improvements and replacements, and assisting with design and analysis of energy efficiency projects.

Activities may include design reviews, field investigations, existing systems assessment, document/archive search, HVAC and plumbing system design and layout, equipment selection and specification, drafting, code review, calculations including spreadsheet analyses and use of engineering software, writing HVAC control system sequences of operation, construction administration services, and development and continuous improvement of campus Design and Construction Guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Owner’s Engineer: provide mechanical engineering oversight of consultants’ study, design, construction, and commissioning for campus projects. Check designs and installations for compliance with Dartmouth design and construction guidelines, energy performance guidelines, and relevant codes (ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, local).
  • Department liaison: act as liaison between FO&M and departments requesting engineering support; troubleshoot with FO&M shops and provide technical insight, problem solving, and solutions for maintenance and operations projects; issue work orders as needed.
  • Engineering Design and Construction Administration: provide design and construction administration services for small mechanical renovation/renewal projects; prepare bid documents, equipment selection, system layout, drafting, and specifications; conduct field inspections and review installation details with contractors; manage as-built documentation and archiving.
  • Campus Design and Construction Guidelines: participate in continuous improvement of campus guidelines and high-performance building design guidelines for designers and contractors on campus.

Qualifications



Required Qualifications — Education and Years of

Experience:

Bachelors plus 6 or more years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering technology, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10) or more years of mechanical design and drafting with an MEP consulting firm, or equivalent.
  • Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in New Hampshire, or ability to become registered within one (1) year of employment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical drafting experience using AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with HVAC and plumbing design, load calculations and system sizing, equipment selection and specification, field verification, codes and standards, and controls design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with energy-efficient HVAC design and control strategies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Detail-oriented self-starter with good interpersonal and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to relate well with a diverse group and build strong relationships within and among groups.
  • Strong service orientation and a demonstrated desire to improve service and operations.
