Position Purpose

The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Engineer applies a high level of knowledge and skill to engineer, design, program, analyze, troubleshoot, optimize, document, and improve campus building automation systems within Dartmouth College facilities. This position primarily concerns HVAC system controls and related integrations. The engineer works to improve controls system performance through design, modifications, and upgrades, optimizing HVAC energy efficiency, stability, speed, durability, and reliability while meeting required environmental conditions.

The engineer also assists in architecting future campus controls systems, reports to and collaborates with the Energy Program Manager, and works closely with the Integrated Automation Program, Campus Services Engineering, and external contractors.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret, modify, and make complex programming modifications to campus control systems and devices to improve energy efficiency and performance.
  • Develop and program complex sequences of operation based on inputs from the Energy Program Manager, FO&M engineers, or outside consultants.
  • Commission and recommission HVAC and other automated building system controls.
  • Assist the Energy Management Program with tasks such as programming sequences, reverse‑engineering controls, reviewing plans, exploring new technologies, troubleshooting efficiency issues, acting on AFDD software indications, and supporting M&V efforts.
  • Design HVAC control systems for BAS upgrade and renewal projects; provide guidance and documentation for installation.
  • Program, integrate, and generate graphics for BAS upgrade and renewal projects.
  • Utilize available documentation (original design, engineered details, sketches, wiring diagrams, O&M, as‑built) and search external sources for missing information.
  • Specify and procure materials and equipment; provide budget estimates for controls upgrades and installations.
  • Produce As‑Built documentation and coordinate archiving of documentation.
  • Track project timelines, provide status reporting, and overcome obstacles to meet quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide input to Project Managers and Engineers on BAS‑related tasks, schedules, and budgets.
  • Offer engineering oversight on BAS in new construction, major renovation, and upgrade projects, including design review, construction administration, shop drawing review, field inspections, and commissioning.
  • Participate in meetings (IA, engineering, BAS shop, project, commissioning); collaborate with FO&M Engineering to maintain and update campus Design and Construction Guidelines for BAS.
  • Support integration of BACnet, Lon, and Modbus controllers, devices, and other building control and energy management systems into BAS, including Noda, Trane, Phoenix, Aircuity, Schneider, and others.
  • Provide input and recommendations for BAS system troubleshooting and upgrades; advise the BAS shop on maintenance and repair needs; generate work orders as appropriate.
  • Assist BAS technicians and vendors with troubleshooting, repair, installation, and programming modifications; use sensors and diagnostic tools to analyze system malfunctions.
  • Create and update BAS graphics; communicate programming changes to BAS shop and other stakeholders; track and document vendor changes.
  • Coordinate with the BAS shop to maintain installation records, controller locations, configurations, repairs, calibrations, and tests.
  • Provide direction to technicians in troubleshooting, testing, calibration, using tools such as manometers, thermometers, data loggers, etc.
