Senior Business Development and Licensing Manager – Engineering, Physical Sciences, AI, and Digital Innovation
Reports to the Director of the Technology Transfer Office and collaborates with Dartmouth researchers and the collegial Technology Transfer team to manage intellectual property and commercialize research assets from Dartmouth College, focusing on engineering, physical sciences, digital media, AI-enabled technologies, and other computer science innovations.

Key Responsibilities Intellectual Property Evaluation and Protection- Build collaborative relationships with faculty and investigators to encourage disclosures of ideas and creations for potential commercial development.
- Identify, define, and analyze patentability of inventions and manage patent prosecution and IP protection for digital, copyrighted, AI‑enabled, and software‑related technologies.
- Work with researchers and outside counsel to secure protection through copyrights, patents, and other innovative methods.
- Conduct market research and evaluate the commercial potential of IP assets, assessing the appropriateness of marketing through open‑source channels.
- Work strategically with inventors, counsel, industry partners, and community stakeholders to advance commercialization opportunities.
- Structure, draft, and negotiate term sheets, option and license agreements, and IP provisions in industry‑sponsored research agreements and other IP‑related agreements.
- Manage licensed portfolios, monitor agreements, and ensure compliance with agreement terms and conditions, including periodic calls, site visits, and reviews of reports and public documents.
- Structure, draft, and oversee joint IP projects and collaborations with other institutions and partners.
- Provide guidance on IP, conflicts of interest, export control, compliance, and confidentiality issues.
- Conduct market research and evaluate the potential impact and value of Dartmouth IP.
- Work with researchers to design strategies for commercializing licensable IP through industry partnerships and start‑up companies.
- Build and maintain relationships with industry sponsors, investors, and licensees.
- Support new ventures and start‑up activity and collaborate with Dartmouth and external entities to promote entrepreneurship.
- Work strategically with creators, administrators, attorneys, industry representatives, investors, and community partners to identify market trends and revenue opportunities, and to advance commercialization opportunities.
- Remain at the forefront of evolving technology, legal, and market trends and creatively apply these insights to disclosure, protection, licensing, and commercialization decisions.
- Develop and implement institutional strategies for protecting and commercializing Dartmouth IP rights and for addressing open‑source considerations.
- Design and deliver educational workshops and informational sessions for the Dartmouth community.
- Pursue professional development to maintain expertise in technology transfer regulations and practices.
- Contribute to the development of office infrastructure, policies, and procedures to strengthen technology transfer operations.
- May supervise and work with interns.
- Maintain accurate records of IP and licensing activities; monitor database integrity and reporting accuracy.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field plus 7 or more years of experience, or a combination of education and experience.
- Experience in computer science, engineering, or physical science, with a broad technical understanding of related technical and scientific areas.
- At least 7+ years of relevant experience in academic technology transfer or business development in a for‑profit setting with a proven track record of success in licensing and commercialization of IP assets.
- Knowledge of IP law and open‑source protocols, and of federal law and regulations pertaining to IP and academic technology transfer.
