Position Title
GIS/Spatial Analysis Specialist
Position PurposeTo support the instructional and research activities of the Geography Department by applying knowledge and skill in GIS, spatial analysis, and related computer technology.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Geography or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of relevant laboratory/research experience.
- Experience teaching/supporting students at the university level.
- Proficiency with geospatial software, especially Esri’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly.
- Competence with quantitative/statistical analytical methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a timely manner.
- Willingness to learn new geospatial software and methods and stay up‑to‑date in a changing field.
- Basic familiarity with coding in one or more languages such as R, Python, or JavaScript, and willingness to develop coding skills further.
- Readiness to collaborate on developing and improving the department’s GIS curriculum and community.
- Serve as lab instructor and teaching assistant for GIS classes at the introductory and intermediate levels.
- Conduct lab sessions, grade assignments, answer student questions, and address technical problems.
- Collaborate with faculty to develop curricula and advise on the use of hardware and software to meet learning objectives.
- Collaborate with faculty and department members on research projects that require GIS operations, spatial analysis, and cartography.
- Support graduate and undergraduate students with geospatial research methods, workflows, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain the software, hardware, and network of the department’s Rahr computer teaching lab to ensure functionality for class teaching.
- Manage the computer lab for classes inside and outside the department, coordinating schedules, maintaining lab space, and communicating lab policies.
- Contribute to the management of other departmental hardware, such as the large‑format plotter.
- Maintain communication with department administrators and provide support as needed, including website maintenance, social media, marketing, and graphic design.
- Demonstrate professionalism and collegiality through appropriate actions, interactions, and communications in a welcoming environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
