Position Purpose
Reporting to the Director and collaborating with the collegial Technology Transfer team, researchers, and other Dartmouth colleagues, the Senior Business Development and Licensing Manager will manage intellectual property (IP) and commercialize research assets from Dartmouth College, with a focus on engineering, physical sciences, digital, media, copyrighted assets, computer science innovations, and AI-enabled assets resulting from Dartmouth research. The role supports researchers and advances Dartmouth technology by identifying, evaluating, marketing, and licensing discoveries, creations, and associated IP assets;
developing relationships with researchers, engaging with industry, supporting startup companies, and fostering entrepreneurship.
- Build collaborative relationships with faculty and investigators, encouraging disclosures of ideas for potential commercial development.
- Identify, define, and analyze patentability of inventions; manage patent prosecution and protect IP in digital, copyrighted, AI-enabled, and software-related technologies.
- Work with researchers and outside counsel to secure protection through copyrights, patents, and other innovative methods.
- Conduct market research and evaluate commercial potential of IP assets, assessing suitability for open-source channels.
- Work strategically with inventors, counsel, industry partners, and community stakeholders to advance commercialization opportunities.
- Structure, draft, and negotiate term sheets, option and license agreements, and IP provisions in industry-sponsored research agreements.
- Manage licensed portfolios, monitor agreements, and ensure compliance with terms and conditions through periodic calls, site visits, and reporting reviews.
- Structure and oversee joint IP projects and collaborations with other institutions and partners.
- Provide guidance on IP, conflicts of interest, export control, compliance, and confidentiality issues.
- Conduct market research and evaluate potential impact and value of Dartmouth IP.
- Work with researchers to design strategies for commercializing licensable IP through industry partnerships and startups.
- Build and maintain relationships with industry sponsors, investors, and licensees.
- Support new ventures and startup activity, collaborating with Dartmouth and external entities to foster entrepreneurship.
- Strategically work with creators, administrators, attorneys, industry representatives, investors, and community partners to identify market trends and revenue opportunities.
- Stay at the forefront of evolving technology, legal, and market trends and apply insights to guide disclosure, protection, licensing, and commercialization decisions.
- Develop and implement institutional strategies for protecting and commercializing Dartmouth IP rights and addressing open-source considerations.
- Design and deliver educational workshops and informational sessions for the Dartmouth community.
- Pursue professional development to maintain expertise in technology transfer regulations and practices.
- Contribute to office infrastructure, policies, and procedures to strengthen technology transfer operations.
- Supervise and work with interns as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of IP and licensing activities; monitor database integrity and reporting accuracy.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or related field plus 7 or more years’ experience (or equivalent combination).
- Experience in computer science, engineering, or physical science with broad technical understanding of related areas.
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in academic technology transfer or business development in a for-profit setting with a proven track record in licensing and commercialization of IP assets.
- Knowledge of IP law and open-source protocols, and of federal regulations pertinent to IP and academic technology transfer.
