Position Purpose

Under minimal direction from supervisory staff, performs a wide variety of often strenuous physical tasks associated with the maintenance of campus grounds using appropriate methods and techniques. Tasks include turf, shrub, and planting bed maintenance, assistance with tree work, repairs to and maintenance of roadways, parking areas, walkways, and associated features, snow and ice removal, and moving furniture and equipment to support campus events.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: High School or equivalency
  • High school graduate with 2+ years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain medium and small equipment.
  • Strong communication skills and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime as required.
  • Qualified under Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Willing to take and pass a Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination.
  • Pass an annual hearing test.
  • Successfully complete required training prior to work:
    Driver Safety, Forklift Operator, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Spaces, Hazard Communication.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High level knowledge of operating and maintaining a wide variety of powered equipment (jackhammers, snow blowers, pumps, electric snakes).
  • Understanding and application of OSHA guidelines concerning excavation, drainage, and confined space entry.
  • Ability to direct work of and provide leadership for small work parties.
Key Accountabilities
  • Maintain landscape features including beds, shrubs, turf (mowing, restoration).
  • Assist Campus Arborist and Tree Worker in maintenance operations.
  • Maintain and repair campus roads, driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, pathways, exterior stairs.
  • Maintain and repair drainage systems.
  • Perform demolition of materials such as brick, concrete, drywall, plaster; transport and dispose debris.
  • Remove debris, discard items, and transport for disposal.
  • Assist with set-up and take-down of major campus events.
  • Pack, load, transport, unload, unpack, arrange, store furniture and equipment between College locations.
  • Perform custodial and maintenance tasks to keep shop area vehicles clean.
  • Operate medium and light‑duty equipment such as mowers, snowblowers, forklifts, pickup trucks, etc.
  • Perform snow and ice removal using medium and small equipment and hand tools.
