Custodian - 1st shift Position Details
- Location: Hanover, NH
- Schedule: 1st shift (four 4‑am options: 4am-12:30pm, 5am-1:30pm, 6am-2:30pm, 7am-3:30pm, 8am-4:30pm) with two consecutive days off.
- Employment Category: Regular Full‑Time
- Union: SEIU, Level C
- Hours per Week: 40
- Annual Salary: $24.04 per hour
Under supervision from the Custodial Squad Leader or Custodial Supervisor, performs a wide variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks, including event set‑ups, animal and insect control, medium to heavy lifting inside and outside the college’s facilities, and implementing recycling procedures.
Responsibilities- On a daily basis or when appropriate: unlocks and locks assigned spaces; cleans, mops, strips, waxes, and buffs all hard surface floors; vacuums and shampoos carpeted areas; washes windows inside and out in entrance halls; dusts office furniture and window sills.
- On a daily basis: cleans public restrooms and showers; scours, disinfects, and deodorises toilet bowls and sinks; wipes and cleans counters; polishes mirrors; replaces and stocks restroom supplies.
- On a daily basis: empties office and common area trash cans; implements FO&M recycling procedures; picks up, bags, and removes all trash inside building and loose trash around building perimeters to designated areas.
- On an as‑needed basis: changes light bulbs, cleans light‑fixture lenses using ladders when necessary.
- On an as‑needed basis: performs major set‑up and break‑down for college events (approx. 30 tables and 350 chairs); sets up based on work order; places tables, chairs, lecterns, podiums; places covers on tables.
- On an as‑needed basis: sweeps dirt and leaves, shovels snow from walkways, spreads sand on walkways at least 3 feet from all entrances; sets traps for rodents and releases captured rodents; sprays inside and outside with chemicals for insect control.
- On an as‑needed basis: keeps note of cleaning materials and equipment needed; notifies Squad Leader when more materials are needed or equipment requires repair or replacement; may assist or act in Squad Leader’s absence on occasion.
- 1–2 years of experience in custodial or facilities maintenance.
- Minimum six months to one year of experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
- Physical ability to perform moderate to heavy labor, including lifting and carrying light‑to‑medium weight objects.
- Ability to work from ladders and step‑ladders to clean light fixtures.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, powered scrubber, buffer, carpet shampooer) and other hand‑operated tools.
- Understanding of safe use of chemicals for cleaning and insect control.
- Familiarity or ability to learn different table/chair arrangements for event set‑ups.
- Willingness to work mandatory overtime when required.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Successful completion of Hazard Communication and Blood‑Born Pathogens training prior to performing related work.
