Position Purpose

The Collections Strategist and Acquisitions Manager is pivotal to the academic mission of this R-1 institution with a library collections budget exceeding $12 million. This position is both strategic and operational, collaborating with department leadership to help shape the future of the team, its systems, and workflows to meet the ever-changing challenges and opportunities of a dynamic scholarly landscape. They also play an essential role in advising and assisting library colleagues and other key stakeholders on strategic, sustainable, and cost-efficient approaches to acquiring library resources for the institutions’ research and teaching mission.

By staying current with emerging trends, the Collections Strategist and Acquisitions Manager will lead Dartmouth Libraries' goal to enhance discovery and access to world-class research collections and content across evolving platforms. This portfolio includes leading and supervising their team, strategizing and implementing library-wide collections licensing and lifecycle for all scholarly formats, contributing to open and transformative access priorities, and applying data-informed decision-making for collections building.

This is a hybrid-eligible work location position.

Description
  • 15% – Works with the Head of Acquisitions and Collection Development to lead and participate in workflows for the lifecycle management of electronic and print resources, including trialing, ordering, establishing and maintaining access, physical processing, invoicing, and reviewing and renewing of electronic and print resources of all types, including (but not limited to) print and ebooks, print and electronic journals, databases, streaming media, artist's books, and other items.
  • 20% – Supervises, recruits, mentors, and guides a team of staff; manages and coordinates the day-to-day ordering, licensing, and troubleshooting of all print and electronic resources while also identifying areas for improvement that ensure sustainability and cost-efficiency.
  • 25% – Serves as an expert in the use of Alma Acquisitions, and the related functions of Dartmouth's financial systems and policies; documents procedures and disseminates process-related information to selectors and relevant Libraries staff.
  • 10% – Applying a strategic lens to workflow and process assessment, implements changes where appropriate to ensure collections building continues to meet the institution's research and teaching mission.
  • 15% – In coordination with the Electronic Resources Librarian, manages acquisitions' licensing workflows and the e-resources renewal process, ensuring the appropriate steps are taken to license and maintain active orders for e-resources.
  • 10% – Collaborates with selectors and other library colleagues in evaluating print and e-resource acquisitions models, including open access models, advising on their suitability for integration of resources into existing workflows; documents and adjusts policies and processes for new acquisitions models as appropriate; guides acquisitions staff in setting up or modifying orders to accurately reflect the acquisition model and license term.
