Position Overview

Research Assistant II, Department of Molecular and Systems Biology, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH.

Job Purpose:

The Kasper Lab seeks a motivated scientist to conduct independent research projects focused on the developmental biology of vascular and hematopoietic systems in zebrafish. Responsibilities include performing molecular and cellular techniques, zebrafish husbandry, data collection, and technical training of lab members.

Independent Experimentation (60%)

• Design, implement, analyze, and interpret experiments under guidance of the principal investigator.
• Develop and refine methods to address research problems.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and recommend solutions to experimental challenges.
• Monitor progress to meet timelines and standards.
• Communicate experimental plans and results with PI regularly.
• Instruct others in laboratory methods and provide technical guidance.

Data Collection & Presentation (15%)

• Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
• Perform literature searches relevant to research.
• Prepare graphs, charts, and statistical analyses for oral presentations.
• Contribute to manuscripts, grant applications, and presentations.

Zebrafish Husbandry and Maintenance (5%)

• Handle breeding, embryo collection, tissue harvesting, and tank maintenance.
• Use PCR, cloning, and imaging to identify genetic alterations and maintain stocks.
• Assist Aquatics Facility staff with feeding and maintenance as needed.

Laboratory Maintenance (5%)

• Order and maintain laboratory supplies.
• Monitor utilization of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
• Ensure equipment performance and arrange necessary maintenance.

Miscellaneous (5%)

• Adhere to laboratory safety and hazardous waste procedures.
• Keep training requirements current.
• Perform other duties as assigned and communicate respectfully with the diverse community.

Required: Bachelor’s degree plus 2–3 years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

• Proficient in molecular laboratory methods (PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy).
• Independent thinker with critical judgment.
• Ability to manage laboratory inventory, records, organization, and time.
• Strong communication skills and hands‑on proficiency.

Preferred:

• Experience in preparing reports and manuscripts.
• Comfort with hazardous materials (radioactive, infectious, hazardous chemicals).
• Computer and software proficiency for data analysis and presentation.
