position overview

the fire safety technician ii must have skills and knowledge in the maintenance and repair of life safety systems. The role performs regular inspections of fire safety assets, with a main focus on fire extinguishers, hydraulic testing and fire doors. The technician assists with testing and maintaining life safety equipment, smoke and sprinkler testing. Under direction, the technician makes minor repairs to fire safety systems, maintains records, reporting, and enters data into the database.

responsibilities
  • inspect fire safety assets, focusing on fire extinguishers, hydraulic testing, and fire doors.
  • assist with regular testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fire safety systems, smoke alarms, and sprinkler systems.
  • make minor repairs to fire safety systems, replacing defective components, wiring, and adjusting mechanical parts.
  • follow basic schematics, wiring diagrams or blueprints for equipment and systems.
  • perform hydro testing and annual fire extinguisher service.
  • assist senior fire safety technicians as needed.
  • maintain knowledge of av systems and set up/monitor public address systems for special events.
  • receive clear and concise instructions from coworkers and learn the procedures and reasoning behind tasks.
  • under direction, assist with testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fire safety systems.
  • align, adjust, and calibrate equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • provide and receive constructive input when mentoring fire safety tech i personnel, allowing qualified technicians to perform work under supervision.
  • demonstrate professionalism, collegiality, and commitment to inclusion in interactions with customers and coworkers.
  • perform other duties as assigned.
required qualifications – education & experience

high school graduate (or ged) plus 3+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • basic knowledge of and experience with fire safety systems.
  • must be able to perform all tasks required of a fire safety tech i position.
  • basic computer skills; able to enter data correctly and document inspections in the database.
  • valid driver’s license and qualification under the dartmouth college driver safety and motor vehicle policy.
  • familiarity with the maintenance and repair of fire safety systems, including alarms and sprinkler systems.
  • basic knowledge of local and national codes and safety regulations related to installation, operation, and maintenance of fire safety systems.
  • knowledge of nfpa 10 fire extinguisher standards.
  • skill in using sprinkler system repair and testing tools (plumb bobs, drills, torches, pipe threaders, bending tools, wrenches).
  • ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and have excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • willingness to work overtime as required.

  • basic computer skills and familiarity with troubleshooting and programming fire alarm panels.
work conditions
  • bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in cramped or awkward positions.
  • lifting, carrying, and holding objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • regular stair climbing in buildings of 4‑5 levels.
  • indoor and outdoor work, including bad weather, noisy, dirty, or smoky areas.
  • exposure to hazards from electric shock, burns, cuts, and chemical fumes.
  • wearing protective clothing such as aprons, overalls, gloves, goggles, and/or masks.
