Position Overview
Title: Software Engineer – Advancement
Location: 41 Centerra Parkway, Lebanon, NH 03766
Schedule: Hybrid (remote with occasional on‑site work; 1–2 days per month at office, up to 3 miles from Dartmouth campus). 40 hours per week.
Position PurposeThe Software Engineer for Advancement is a full‑stack developer who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications that advance the mission of Dartmouth’s Advancement division. This role requires strong technical expertise across multiple platforms and programming languages, combined with deep business understanding. The engineer works independently on moderate to complex technical work, contributes to team‑based architecture and implementation, and collaborates with teammates, clients, vendors, and campus partners to develop custom applications, enhance vendor systems, and support integrations across Advancement systems and institutional platforms.
ResponsibilitiesSoftware Development (60%)
- Design, develop, test, and maintain custom software solutions that meet user needs and align with institutional standards.
- Translate technical requirements into functional software components.
- Participate in solution design and architecture discussions, contributing to decisions on system structure, integration approaches, and performance optimization.
- Develop and consume APIs and web services for system interoperability.
- Maintain and enhance database‑driven applications using tools such as Oracle PL/SQL and APEX.
- Implement unit testing, automated testing frameworks, and follow version control and release management best practices.
- Support infrastructure and application support for both on‑premises and cloud environments.
- Collaborate on deployments and contribute to automation and Dev Ops workflows.
- Develop and enhance documentation supporting systems, integrations, and processes.
- Work closely with team members to complete tasks aligned to team goals and delivery timelines.
- Partner with stakeholders to understand business needs, clarify requirements, and deliver value through technical solutions.
- Support vendor system implementations and integrations; engage with vendors on issue resolution.
- Maintain strong working relationships with functional teams, end users, and other IT professionals across the institution.
- Participate in agile ceremonies, sprint planning, retrospectives, and team‑based prioritization.
- Share technical knowledge through documentation, code reviews, cross‑training, and informal mentoring of colleagues.
- Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with tools, languages, frameworks, and higher education technology practices.
- Contribute to team culture through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Full‑stack application development experience.
- Experience with Oracle PL/SQL, SQL, APEX, data migrations, and database administration.
- At least one programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Java, C#).
- Front‑end development skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
- RESTful APIs and system integration experience.
- Version control (Git, SVN) and release pipeline experience.
- Knowledge of internet communication components, DNS/DNAME, SMTP, SSL/TLS, authentication, and encryption.
- Familiarity with Dev Ops principles and CI/CD tools.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently on technical tasks and contribute to team solutions.
- Vendor system integration and support for ERP platforms (e.g., Advancement, SIS, Finance, HR).
- Data governance, privacy, and compliance standards (FERPA, HIPAA, GDPR).
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Exposure to Agile development methodologies and tools.
- Understanding of institutional workflows in higher education.
- Experience in database administration tasks.
- Proficiency in application upgrade, cloning, and installation procedures.
