Revenue Collections Agent

This is an administrative position. The incumbent performs investigative and follow-up field and office work in collecting current and delinquent personal property and real estate taxes, State income taxes, dog license fees and returned checks and collections for various County Departments.

The Revenue Collections Agent reports to a Business Manager and supervises no staff.

Essential functions include:

  • Analyzing the more difficult tax accounts to determine the best means of collection and maintaining a follow-up file on these.
  • Appearing in court for the County to obtain judgments.
  • Assisting taxpayers with difficult or unusual problems regarding payments.
  • Explaining requirements for compliance with the laws concerning enforcement of payment of delinquent taxes.
  • Handling correspondence dealing with complex problems and questions of tax liability.
  • Initiating tax liens and summonses.
  • Maintaining records on all delinquent taxes collected.
  • Researching delinquent accounts for correct addresses, employment and banking data to aid in collection.
  • Assisting taxpayers in working out payment plans based upon ability and legal requirements.
  • Performing related work as assigned.

Working conditions include:

  • Non-exempt.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required include:

  • Ability to interact positively with the public.
  • General knowledge of the laws pertaining to the collection of delinquent accounts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • General computer literacy or skills preferably in Microsoft Office computer programs.
  • Basic knowledge of records maintenance and ability to maintain general office records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees and the general public.

Education, experience and training required:

  • High school or equivalent required with at least two (2) years' customer service experience preferred – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.

Special conditions include:

  • Serves at the will of the Treasurer.
  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting.
  • Twelve-month probationary period.
