Volunteer Firefighter/EMT

Hanover County Government is seeking dedicated volunteers to join their Fire/EMS department. This is a skilled, technical position that involves providing emergency services, including fire suppression and emergency medical care. The role requires responding to fire alarms and emergency calls, performing routine and complex tasks to protect life and property, and providing emergency medical care to the sick or injured.

The incumbent must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather situations, including extinguishing fires, ventilating buildings, and administering first aid. Knowledge of firefighting and emergency medical techniques, as well as the ability to remain composed in stressful situations, is essential. The position also requires basic knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, and the chemistry and physics of fire.

Education, experience, and training in related fields are desired, though a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Special conditions include shift work, wearing uniforms, and undergoing a physical examination and background check. Junior members must maintain a minimum grade of "C" in each class taken.

Hanover County provides benefits such as free basic training in fire and EMS disciplines, uniforms, and personal property tax relief for the vehicle used for response. Applicants must pass a physical exam and background check, and those in EMS must be fingerprinted for a criminal background check.
